Monastir directly translates as monastery in French, which makes complete sense. The area was under French occupation for some time and many of the names are still in French. This oceanside city has some beautiful architecture and historical locations, in addition to beautiful Mediterranean beaches and of course, lets not forget the SHOPPING! One of the largest Arab influences in the area is seen in the markets, called Souks and Bazaars. You can buy everything from rugs to brass and copper items to clothes. Shopping is an experience in the souks. One could get blissfully lost wandering through all the narrow alleyways.
