Discover the Delights of Cape Greco Cyprus
For those pertinent travellers who still want to be within reach of the buzzing, happening, 18-30 scene of Ayia Napa in Cyprus; but who also want something a little more relaxing too by way of scenery and uncrowded beaches - then Cape Greco would be a perfect choice.
Cape Greco is a beautiful little place with a picturesque blue flag beach, locally known as Konnos Bay and a protected nature park that is an area of natural beauty, populated with bird watchers and walkers. Quite often you will see the spectacular dives from birds on the cliffs into the beautiful clear blue sea below. Above the caves there is a large platform and this provides for wonderful panoramic viewing. Spectacular is the best way to describe the views from here.
Although a much quieter, peaceful holiday resort than its bustling counterpart, Ayia Napa, it is far from boring. There are plenty of activities and areas of natural beauty to explore. From Konnos bay, you can hire jet skis and go snorkelling or scuba diving. The best way to explore the caves and get the best views is to join one of the many boat tours operating in the area. If you fancy a bit of fishing, the deep sea fishing tour operators are worth taking a look at, a brilliant opportunity to catch that elusive big fish!
The sea at the Konnos bay is so clear that you can even see the beautiful starfish glistening in the waters beneath. Konnos bay although wide, is still sheltered from the winds and so provides a perfect area to sunbathe.
There is a local myth surrounding the caves of Cape Greco that says that deep below its beautiful clear waters lies a friendly Sea Monster, with alleged sightings right up to this present day. So if you are thinking of Cape Greco as your choice of holiday destination this year, keep a look out. Some of the tour operators use glass bottomed boats for just such a purpose. Legend has it that you are looking for a cross between a porpoise, a dragon and large reptile. So you now know what to look out for!
Cape Greco also is home to a historic lighthouse. This lighthouse was built during the British rule and dates back to the 19th Century. It stands proudly, at the end of the plateau and is still maintained by the Cyprus Ports Authority.
If you are traveling to Cape Greco from nearby Ayia Napa and you have hired a car, it is about one mile away along the Protaras road, only a 5 minute drive. Alternatively, you could hire a bike and take in the lovely scenery along the route and perhaps stop off at a Tavern along the way. The nearest airport is Lamaka, approximately 25 miles away.
There are plenty of other places of interest to visit around Cape Greco. Ayia Napa is home to a 16th Century monastery which has absolutely amazing ruins and a local well known fountain.
Although primarily the Cape Greco and Protaras tourist area is very family orientated, it is still very lively. There are some terrific fish bars and something for all tastes as there are plenty of restaurants and bars - Chinese, Italian, Mexican and traditional Cypriot food, to suit all tastes and budgets. The most popular of these would be 'The Grecian Park' which has a cliff top bar offering breath-taking views of the sunset and Cape Greco National Park. This really is the perfect place to sit and savour that well earned cocktail, absorbing the fantastic views. 'The Grecian Park Hotel' also has its own nightclub venue and live entertainment. On the 4th floor is a Japanese restaurant which has won several awards.
If its happening nightlife you are after, then Ayia Napa is only one mile away, just a short 5 minute taxi ride. It is home to some of the most famous night clubs. 'The Live Lounge Venue' is new to Ayia Napa and plays live indie music, Monday to Sunday inclusive. 'The Bedrock Inn' is where some of the most famous DJ's hang out and has quirky Flintstones décor, complete with cavemen staff! 'Starsky's Club' is where you can enjoy the latest commercial hits.
Cape Greco really does have something for everyone. Being situated just a 5 minute drive or taxi journey away either Ayia Napa or Protaras; it is the perfect holiday spot for families and partygoers alike. Cape Greco holds the best of both worlds as you can relax and take in all that Cape Greco has to offer, such as the extensive water sports facilities, beach and caves - but if you would like to party on in clubbers paradise then Ayia Napa is close enough.
