Costa Caleta is a relatively young resort town in Fuerteventura ideal for family holidays. Boasting a view over a beautiful crescent bay, acres of soft golden sand, child-safe beaches and near-guaranteed sunshine, Caleta is the perfect relaxation destination.
There is plenty to do here when you take a break from the beach. For adults there is a Championship golf course; diving trips, windsurfing schools, and jet ski hire from the water centre; and a variety of live entertainment in the pubs and clubs. For children there are activities including mini-golf, the still waters of the bay, trampolines, and ball games such as tennis and volleyball.
As a family destination, Caleta excels at activities the whole family can do together. Day trips on yachts, a multiplex cinema, a water park in nearby Corralejo, and a new shopping arcade are just a handful of the days out at hand. There is a market along the high street on Saturday mornings which boasts a great selection of clothes, dress jewellery and African goods. If you wish to use Caleta as a base you can travel further afield to the nature reserve of Isla de Lobos, the sand dunes of northern Fuerteventura, the sub-tropical zoo of Paradise Park near Costa Calma, or the remote and traditional villages in the area. Try not to forget a pocket full of unshelled pistachio nuts either the local wild chipmunks are not so wild when faced with one of these treats, and will readily take them from your hands and shell them before your eyes, which makes for an unforgettable experience and excellent holiday snaps.
Of course Caleta's beach and sea are always waiting after your day's adventures.
Being a seafront town, Caleta has a huge variety of seafood restaurants boasting the freshest catches of the day in a mouth-watering variety of dishes. It is impossible not to find something you will like. There are Spanish, Chinese, Thai, English, Mexican, Greek, and many more restaurants to choose from, and bars also offer a variety of meals and snacks.
Almost all bars and restaurants in the town and immediate area are family-owned and run. This means the owners and staff are all invested in ensuring that your time is the best that they can make it, and you will find friendly and helpful staff coupled with excellent food and service wherever you choose. Some bars even have pools to relax in or by. Open for breakfast in the morning and right the way through to a late meal, karaoke or relaxing drinks, they are available to your schedule, not their own.
Nightlife is safe and fun, with many bars and clubs offering karaoke, live music and dancing in cosy, hassle-free environments. This is not a destination for all-night raves and heavy drinking, it is a more traditional nightlife where you are looked after by your hosts and making new friends is easy. Bars in Caleta have themes, so picking the spot that is right for your mood could not be easier, whether you would like to watch the football or have an Eighties night. With very reasonable prices it is easy to while away the evening without hurting your budget.
Costa Caleta is easy to reach, whether you are an international or local traveller. Only ten minutes from Puerto del Rosario Airport, a taxi will cost approximately twelve euros. In spite of proximity to the airport, aircraft noise is minimal.
To take advantage of Caleta as a base, consider hiring a car at Puerto del Rosario. The drive down to Caleta is pleasant, signposted clearly, and there are plenty of petrol stations in the area. It might prove more convenient than using a taxi for longer day trips, as Caleta only has ten or so taxis and they cannot be booked in advance - although they will arrive within ten minutes of you phoning for them.
Bus travel is slower, but far cheaper than taxis. At only 1.30 per person from the airport to Caleta, with timetables available at major stops and the airport, getting around by bus is simple and affordable.
Fuerteventura is too small for train links between cities, although there are small tourist trains and funiculars dotted around the island.
For a leisurely day exploring the local area, Caleta's only bicycle shop also provides rentals for very good rates, and even offers bicycle tours led by an experienced, passionate local guide and a map of local cycling routes should you treasure your independence. You can also rent trailers or trail-a-longs so that children can accompany you without having to pedal. Trailers are especially useful as they have sunshades built in.
For a safe, clean, relaxing holiday, Costa Caleta ticks all the right boxes.
