A visit to the peaceful little town of Ortakent on the Bodrum Peninsula is like stepping back in time. The resort is one of the oldest settlements in this part of Turkey and remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
Situated right in the middle of the Bodrum Peninsula midway along the Turgutreis-Bodrum road, Ortakent makes a fantastic base for anyone interested in discovering the real Turkey.
The long, sandy beach at Ortakent is separated from the town by a valley lush with fig, citrus and olive trees, as well as traditional market gardens which are typical of the area. Ortakent is popular with families who enjoy the long, sandy beach as well as anyone looking to explore the Bodrum Peninsula.
The transfer time from Bodrum airport is approximately 1 hour 35 minutes.
Ortakent is an ideal location for anyone dreaming of a sun-soaked holiday. The main holiday season runs from May to October, when rainfall is virtually unheard of and the sun is almost guaranteed to shine. With between 10 and 13 hours of sunshine a day during the peak months of July and August, Ortakent is an ideal destination to recharge your batteries and top up your tan.
High summer in Ortakent can be very hot, with temperatures regularly hitting 34 degrees C or more during July and August. A cooling breeze from the sea does provide some relief however, especially during the mornings and early afternoons. If you're not a fan of the heat, visit during May or September where temperatures are generally cooler but still hover between 25 and 30 degrees C.
Ortakent is a small resort that retains all its traditional charm. Although the beach is separated from the town by a valley rich with orchards and market gardens, the stroll down to the beach is very pleasant and well worth the journey.
The Mustafa Pasa is an 17th century tower house which was built to defend Ortakent from invaders. With thick walls and canon posts, it towers above the town and is well worth a visit.
The beach at Ortakent is known locally as Ortakent Yalisi and stretches for 2km into the neighbouring resort of Yashi Yali. The beach is long and sandy with plenty of entertainment options. Stop off for a drink or snack at one of the many bars and restaurants that line the shore, or try one of the many water sports on offer. Water skiing, sailing and windsurfing are just some of the options for anyone looking for something more strenuous than sunbathing.
A good selection of shops at Ortakent offer everything you need during your stay, including food, drinks and souvenirs.
Alternatively for a more authentic Turkish shopping experience, head to the traditional bazaars in the bohemian city of Bodrum which lies 12km away.
Situated in the centre of the Bodrum Peninsula and midway along the Bodrum - Turgutreis road, Ortakent makes an ideal base for exploring the region.
Hiring a car will enable you to reach some of the traditional villages which lie inland as well as along the coast, or do the hard work yourself and hire a bike. Cycling is not for the faint-heated during the heat of the high summer, however.
Don't miss the opportunity to visit the captivating city of Bodrum during your stay. The city has plenty to interest visitors young and old, and is only 12km away from Ortakent. The imposing Castle of St Peter is an interesting place to visit, with dungeons, towers and a fascinating museum to explore.
