Beautiful and fertile, the island is blessed with some of the most dramatic scenery in the region. Mount Ainos (1628 m.) dominates the south of the island and has been declared a national park. Its tall fir trees (abies cephalonica) are unique to Kefalonia and a small number of wild horses still roam the woodlands. Excavations have established that there were settlements on the island as far back as 50,000 BC.

The wonderful beaches of Kefalonia are famous in Greece for their extreme and unspoiled natural beauty. They all have fine golden or white sand and magnificent emerald waters. Argostoli the capital of the island, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953, very little remains, one or two houses, the picturesque Fiskardo and the arched bridge stretching across the lagoon and the obelisk at its centre, which commemorates the date of its construction. Lixouri, Kefalonias second largest town is the vestiges of the ancient city of Pali.

On the east side of the island are Poros, Sami and Agia Efimia with its pebbled beaches. Fiskardo, the northernmost harbour on Kefalonia, has kept its traditional colour. Lying opposite and very close to Ithaca, it is surrounded by a thick cypress glade.
