If you want a warm and friendly welcome in a fantastic picturesque setting, then the beach at Cavelossim in Goa will be right up your street. Situated in the south of this renowned part of India, the area is quieter and more refined than some other more animated resorts. Set against a backdrop of paddy fields, it has 10km of warm white sand to luxuriate and stretch out on; perfect for strolls watching the waves of the Arabian Sea lap at your feet as you collect a myriad of beautifully patterned shells. You can walk for miles in the tranquil paradise and not see another soul ideal for escaping the stresses of everyday life.
The locals are really great at making you feel welcome and firm friendships extend beyond the end of your holiday. Often you will hear of people who return year after year to visit their new friends as well as to enjoy this wonderful beach. What was once just a beach has now grown into a village with the addition of a good variety of accommodation (guesthouses and resort hotels) and a fantastic array of bars, restaurants and fascinating shops. It has a typical village square and church and a great community feel.
The pace of life is slow and relaxing but should you fancy getting out and about a boat trip out into the idyllic bay to spot dolphins is a great favourite, followed by going inland up the River Sal to marvel at the array of native birds such as river storks, kingfishers and egrets. You can wind down with a massage on the beach, pure luxury in a perfect setting. It's a serene picture, laying under a kaleidoscope of parasols watching the local fishermen spreading the nets for the daily catch.
The shops offer a great choice of jewellery, pashminas and saris there are even tailors, whose speed, quality (and value) are breathtaking. Many of the high class resort hotels along the seafront offer facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses and casinos. These luxurious hotels also provide a stunning setting as an alternative to eating at one of the beach shacks. Wherever you eat the menu variety is fantastic and the seafood in particular is always excellent.
The airport at Dabolim is 40km away the nearest railway is at Margao 17km away. Taxis and motorcycles are freely available to take you the rest of your journey. Once you arrive in Cavelossim, hiring a scooter or bike is a widespread way of travelling around, but taxis are cheap and readily available too. There is a bus stand in the centre of the village with connections for local villages. Note, if you are heading towards Canacona, south of the village, you will need to take the Cavelossim-Assolna ferry crossing near the mouth of the Sal River.
Evenings see beach parties and fireworks down by the shacks by the sea. The festivities go on through the night, with fire dancers, bonfires and a newfound camaraderie to give you a lifetime of memories.
