Situated in south west Crete, 77km south of Chania, the Cretan village of Paleochora is popular with both couples and families alike. There are currently around 2000 residents in the village, all of whom are dedicated to the tourist industry and take pride in making your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Getting to Paleochora from Chania Airport is no problem, as buses run four times a day. It is advised that you check the nearest bus to your flight before you leave so that you are prepared for any waiting that you may have to do at the airport. Driving around Paleochora is easy, as there are car hire services in the village along with reliable taxi services. The main road in the village closes to vehicles at night, so ensure that you know where you are able to park if you wish to spend the evening in the village. There are also ferries which connect Paleochora with several other villages in Crete, which may be worth a visit. The fares are very reasonable and the service runs regularly.
The area contains many small hotels and offers rooms and apartments to rent. With so many hotels to choose from, it is advised that you research what each of them offers to make sure that you are choosing the perfect option for your holiday. Unlike a lot of popular tourist destinations, Paleochora also offers two campsites which are suitable for anyone who might be interested in the nature of the area.
The village itself contains a supermarket and several small shops, as well as an open air cinema which is very popular in the evening. Also available are banks and a police station if you should find yourself in any difficulty. Most of the locals speak good English and will be able to help you if you should need them.
The village boasts two beaches, which are perfect for outdoor activities such as swimming, windsurfing, scuba diving and snorkelling. To the west of the village is a sandy beach and to the east is a pebbly beach, so you can choose whichever one you wish to visit. When taking part in any activities, there will always be an instructor to help you if you get into any difficulties. Both beaches have spectacular views across the ocean and the sea is usually extremely calm and a clear, deep blue.
If beach activities are not the thing for you, you may enjoy hiking and walking around the beautiful surroundings. There are lots of wild flowers in the spring and a lot of rare flowers and animals for you to see in the summer time.
Many tourists are attracted by the architecture of the churches. In particular, the wall paintings inside some of the main churches are wonderful and well worth a visit if you have the time.
There are many restaurants in the village, providing you with a wide range of foods. You are certain to find something that you will enjoy. Children are welcome in all restaurants and are provided with portions suitable for them. In Crete, meal times are seen as a time to savour rather than to be rushed, so do not mistake laid back service as slow service. The restaurant staff are wonderful and friendly and wish for you to enjoy your evening with them.
With regards to night life, there are some pubs and clubs, however, the night time experience is not as intense as you might find in other tourist destinations. Do not let this deter you as the clubs will still allow you to enjoy your time there. If you wish for a more intense experience, nearby towns offer this and it is possible to take a bus or a taxi there. Please ensure that if you take a bus, you know when the bus will be returning to Paleochora, as some services do not continue as late as you would expect.
Ensure that you have emergency contact numbers for local hospitals, doctors and police. If you do this, you will not need to worry if you find yourself in any kind of trouble during your stay. Also keep a basic first aid kit with you at all times in case of accidents.
Whether you are taking a holiday to relax or to see the local scenery, Paleochora will certainly offer something that interests you. With such a wide range of activities available during your stay, along with beautiful beaches and amazing nature, it is not surprising that so many holidaymakers choose to stay here.
