Holidays in Kairaba Beach

The well established Kairaba Hotel is situated in The Gambia's liveliest resort Kololi Beach. Not only do you have the white sands and turquoise seas of Kololi to laze away your days but the tranquil and lush grounds that The Kairaba is situated in provide a great setting for the ultimate relaxation experience.

All of the Kairaba Hotel's luxurious en suite rooms have a satellite TV, Internet access, direct dial telephone, bath tub, hairdryer, tea and coffee making facilities, minibar, iron and ironing board, a safe and individually regulated air conditioning. The pool is conveniently located on the beachfront and is suitable for all age groups with a dedicated children's swimming area. Guests of the hotel get free towels and sun loungers. For the more energetic holidaymaker aerobics, table tennis, basketball, volleyball, beach volleyball, banana boating, water skiing and other watersports are available. There is also a gym with steam room and sauna and beauty salon with a massage parlour.

The nearby town of Kololi is generally considered to be the liveliest of The Gambia's resorts with a good selection of bars, clubs and restaurants on an area known as 'The Strip.' Here you will also find shops, two casinos, Internet cafes, banks and exchange bureaux.

The Gambia's enviable climate produces year round warmth but the rainy season, between late June and October is best avoided if you are looking for lots of sunshine. The best time to visit The Gambia is during the dry season between November and May. Most UK airports fly out to Banjul International Airport during the dry season but flights can be less often during the rainy season making the dry season the obvious choice for a visit to The Gambia. The flight from Western Europe generally takes around 6 hours and with the same GMT,there is no jet lag! The Kairaba Hotel is around 20 minutes drive from Banjul Airport.

The Kairaba offers a good selection of options when it comes to dining. There is the à la carte restaurant 'Shikra' for those wanting the 'total' dining experience or the lively outdoors bistro the Casa Fernando's. Breakfast can be taken in the elevated Kingfisher Restaurant, which gives you lovely views over the area providing a perfect start to your day.

There is also a poolside snack bar, The Malimbe that serves tasty light lunches and occasionally hosts the themed buffet evenings and a coffee bar the Havana Club giving you lots of dining options. And of course the local beach bars and restaurants in the Kololi area are great places to sample the local cuisine or if you would prefer to find somewhere selling more westernised dishes.

The nearby Kololi Beach is a great place for some rest and relaxation but for those who prefer more lively activities than sunbathing there are the usual water sports on offer and several of the hotels organise their own beach volleyball tournaments. There is even an 18 hole golf course situated near to Kololi Beach should you fancy a game of golf. You should be able to book excursions via the hotel - anything from river safaris to fishing trips.

If you are feeling adventurous and want to explore the local area it's probably best to book a guide to show you around. Taxis are another option and the Kairaba has it's own rank which you can hire 'tourist' taxis from. These usually operate on a fixed price basis and also offer a 'wait and return' service so you can explore at your own pace. Local taxis can be flagged down but take note that these operate almost the same as buses taking only certain routes and picking up other customers along the way.

Places to visit include the nearby Bijilo Forest Park, its lush tropical gardens and abundance of trees offer some shade form the heat of the midday sun and make a great spot for a picnic. You will be able to hear the monkeys chattering from up above in the trees and may be lucky enough to spot some of the local exotic birds that inhabit this area. The River Gambia is nearby and there are some great River Safari excursions you can join where you get to visit traditional riverside villages and experience something of the real Western African culture. Other attractions include the Senegambia Craft Market where there are some great opportunities to pick up locally made traditional arts and crafts. Jewellery, clothing, woodcarvings, batiks and other artwork can all be bought here which all helps to support local business. The Kachikally Crocodile Pool is just 15 minutes away by taxi and The Abuko Nature Reserve a 30 minute drive away. Should you want to explore further the Makasutu Culture Forest is an hours drive away by taxi.
