Thomas Cook is widely credited with the organization of the first excursion as far back as 1841 when he organized a short trip for 570 passengers to travel the short distance from Leicester to Loughborough by railway the sort distance of 11 miles to the north and by modern train travel would take as little as 9 minutes but it was not until 1850 that the first true "cheap holiday abroad" was arranged to take passengers to Calais.
