If you want peace and tranquility on a warm sandy beach then Uvero Alto in the Dominican Republic may just be the resort for you. Situated at the northern end of miles and miles of some of the best beaches in the world the Uvero Alto beach is lapped luxuriously by the crystal clear turquoise Caribbean Sea. A picture-perfect landscape, the coconut palm lined beach is spotlessly clean (even groomed of any washed-up seaweed overnight) and is the perfect spot for deep relaxation.
One hour driving from the charming thatched Punta Cana International Airport the delights of Uvero Alto can be easily reached either by transfer bus (many hotels offer this service directly from the airport to the hotel) or by taxis, which are readily available. Be sure to agree a price with the taxi driver before setting off. If you are brave then hiring a car can give you the flexibility to travel where and when you choose, but be warned the driving conditions can be very different to home.
This applies to the local bus services too in addition whilst they are frequent and cheap they can be overcrowded and unscheduled. An exciting and extravagant way to travel to Uvero Alto is to take a helicopter the views of the coastline are breathtaking, the colours magical and the sparkling sea and long strip of perfect sands really give you a flavour of the rest and well-being to come.
The architecture is heavily influenced by Spanish and Mexican ideas and the low-rise white washed walls of these villas are nestled in thick tropical foliage, with gorgeous scented flowers and parrots, peacocks and flamingos sauntering around. It a little off the beaten track so isn't as busy as some of the more lively resorts along this stretch of Punta Cana.
There are lots of beautiful coral reefs along the coastline, some quite close to the beach, which makes for fantastic snorkelling to see the myriad of colourful fish. Trips to see sharks, dolphins and rays are a delight. From January to March migrating whales can be spotted. The outlying reef makes swimming safe and water sports of all sorts are popular pastimes - banana boats, kayaking, sailing and windsurfing are just a few.
If you can manage to leave this beautiful beach behind, there are all sorts of excursions to enjoy safaris with 4x4 jeeps or monster trucks can be a thrilling adventure. Some of the hotels offer courses in cooking, dancing, art or languages. A wonderful way of exploring the stunning scenery around Uvero Alto is to take a horse or mountain bike the landscape is pretty flat so you can easily reach areas inaccessible by public transport.
When the sun goes down, there's a great and varied choice of things to entertain you. Themed shows, discos, casinos, bars and restaurants all let you carry on soaking up the atmosphere well into the early hours. With plenty of tranquil deserted spots to chill out the following day, you can be ensured of continued relaxation in this little part of paradise.
