Rio San Juan Holidays

Rio San Juan is situated in the north-eastern corner of the Dominican Republic. It is a small and picturesque farming village which is surrounded by beautiful beaches and scenery. The town itself has a busy fishing port and a lively environment brought about by trade. It can be a little sleepy so it's ideal for those looking for a quiet holiday, romantic getaway or those looking for a base from which to explore the local area.

Getting to Rio San Juan is very easy, since the town has connections with all the major transport routes and if you don't have a car you can catch a local bus, or 'guagua', to other locations. The fares are cheap and you will experience some local culture at the same time.

The little village of Rio San Juan is a great place to stay and travel to places in the surrounding area. The beaches nearby offer clear waters and soft sands and there is a beach for every type of traveller. Since this side of the island is on the Atlantic, the sea tends to be rougher than on the south side in the Caribbean. Playa Caleton is a secluded beach with calm waters which are good for swimming and is a stone's throw away from Rio San Juan. Playa Grande is a more extensive beach and provides excellent waves for surfing.

One of the main attractions of the area is the superb Gri-Gri Lagoon. Visitors can take boat tours across the sparkling clear water to explore the unusual rock formations and caves surrounded by thick mangrove trees. You can also take a swim in the natural pool to cool down, relax and watch the many species of birds that live in the trees.

Other activities include diving and snorkelling so you can get closer to nature underwater as well. The area is becoming renowned for its diving possibilities and there are plenty to choose from including sea dives, freshwater cave dives and wreck dives.

Rio San Juan is also home to a world class golf course. Situated in Playa Grande, golfers can enjoy one of the best courses in the Caribbean on a stunning tip of land above the sea.

The area has a lively nightlife being influenced by the vibrant Latin culture. There are restaurants and bars in Rio San Juan and the nearby resorts of Cabarete and Cabrera offer some exciting bars and clubs in which to dance the night away.

One of the most notable things about this area of the Dominican Republic is the hospitality and friendliness of the locals. Even as a visitor to the town you are likely to make friends and have an enjoyable time because of the respect they show one another. There are also low crime rates so going out in the town should be an easy-going experience.

There are opportunities to take a jeep and explore the local unspoilt countryside which is brimming with wildlife. The town is a superb destination to stay and relax or to visit simply as a stop-off whilst passing through to another place. It has a great atmosphere, beautiful views and friendly people.
