Playa Dorada is situated on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, about 5km east of the city of Puerto Plata. This area includes more than a dozen hotel resorts, making it a favourite amongst tourists and boasting an international community.
The nearest airport is Gregorio Luperón International, located to the west of Puerto Plata. To travel around the area you can hire a car, take a taxi or take the local buses or 'guaguas' either east or west to explore the region. These are extremely cheap and stop off in most towns.
Within the hotel complex you can ride bikes to visit other hotels. There are also shuttle buses that run to the beach and back if the hotel is further away. These hotels include restaurants, bars and casinos and there is a shopping centre, gift shops and cinema near to the resort. There is also an 18 hole golf course to enjoy.
The beach is close to the hotel complex and is just one of many beautiful examples in the Dominican Republic. This beach is one of the most popular along the northern coast, meaning that it can get crowded due to the large numbers of visitors. If you prefer quieter beaches, there are plenty nearby you can choose from.
Water sports are extremely popular in the area. The Atlantic provides good waves for surfing, whilst the clear waters are great for snorkelling and diving. There are corals to explore as well as caves and shipwrecks which are home to hundreds of fish.
There are plenty of options for dining outside the hotel, such as in the Playa Dorada Plaza or in Puerto Plata. To experience some local evening entertainment there are also salsa and merengue music bars and clubs which are great for having a good time and meeting some locals.
Ocean Park World is a popular attraction amongst visitors, located 15 minutes west of Puerto Plata and boasts a dolphin lagoon, a shark pool, stingray encounters and the chance to swim in an aquarium. There is also a bird and safari sanctuary for you to get close to some exotic species.
For those who fancy some fun, Columbus Water Park has slides and swimming pools that will provide hours of entertainment for adults and children alike. Fun City Action Park offers go karting and dodgems and is also close to Playa Dorada.
To get a beautiful view over Puerto Plata you can take a cable car up to the Isabella de Torres botanical gardens. Here you can wander through tropical plant life along numerous trails and beside streams.
Puerto Plata also has plenty of things to see and do. There are several museums, shops, the San Felipe Fort which was built in the 16th century and the Puerto Plata lighthouse.
Staying in Playa Dorada is a great base for visitors since there are many activities available at the hotel complex to keep you occupied. It's also close to a beautiful beach and nearby other superb locations along the northern coast.
