Named Negrillo by the Spanish, Negril in Jamaica has grown from a small town to one of the world's top tourist resorts. It has been claimed that it is the place where nothing is impossible. Thousands of tourists are lured here every year looking for sunshine and a party atmosphere and indeed, this is what they find. The beaches are beautiful, the people welcoming and the parties are just crazy.
Negril has a seven mile beach, fantastic sunsets and many hotels and restaurants catering for all budgets. It is the perfect place for a beach holiday and has been nominated as one of the world's top ten beaches by various travel magazines. At the northern end of the beach are the larger resorts whilst at the southern end are small family run hotels so there is a great choice of accommodation to suit all budgets.
The sand in this area is pure sparkling white and seems to gleam somehow. The sea is a bright azure blue. There are many caves to explore and there are tour operators who will take you by boat to enjoy the sites along the coast. If you prefer to go it alone you can hire bikes or even motorbikes and driving is on the left. There are interesting shopping plazas in the centre of Negril as well as local craft markets.
This place really does offer everything to the visitor but if you really want to get away from it all then why not hire a car and visit inland Jamaica which is virtually unknown to tourists. There are many attractions as well as the beaches and car hire is easily available from the airports and larger towns.
The Belvedere Estate is a thousand acre estate only a short drive from Negril. This was one of Jamaica's first sugar plantations and is still in operation today. It has been opened up to tourists who can now share in its natural beauty. Rivers, waterfalls, exotic plants and brightly coloured birds can be enjoyed here.
If you enjoy horseback riding, Rhodes Hall will provide expert guides who will take you through coconut and banana groves high up in the hills. A highlight of the tour is crocodile watching. You can also choose to trot or gallop along the beach according to your ability.
Negril has a variety of places to eat to suit all tastes and budgets. Located on the beach is Margueritaville Negril which is a hip party bar. There is a water trampoline here, waterside sky chairs and over 50 flavours of margarita are served. A wonderful all day menu offers everything from local dishes to Indian cuisine. If you haven't been to Margueritaville then it's said that you haven't been to Negril!
West End Road is known as the cliff area and offers good snorkelling and diving as well as easy access to the water. Cliff jumpers use Rick's Café but they need to be aware of the dangers of attempting to jump from rocks. The sunsets from Rick's are said to be amongst the best sights in the world.
There really is everything on this beautiful island to make a holiday go with a swing. You will find hot sun, gleaming sand and sparkling sea as well as peace and quiet in the many tropical gardens. Jamaica has exploited its natural beauty to the benefit of the visitor and it is an island which seems to imprint itself on the brain, never to be forgotten.
