With the River Yuma running through it, Higuey is located in the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic. This thriving city is the capital city of the eastern province of La Altagracia. It is one of the fastest growing in the country and is famed for its proximity to beautiful beaches and its religious and cultural sites.
Higuey is a famous pilgrimage location because of its cathedral, the "Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia", one of the most respected religious monuments in the Dominican Republic. The Basilica was built in 1971 to replace the old Sanctuary of Higuey which dated from the 16th century. It houses the famous painting of the "Virgen de la Altagracia", the country's patron saint as well as the altar of La Virgen de la Altagracia. The painting is framed with gold and precious metals and was made in the 15th century by a Spanish painter. Every year hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flood the city on the Virgin of La Altagracia Day, 21st January.
The old site of the painting is still available to view today and contains many items of much historic and religious value. In contrast to the modern Basilica, the old Sanctuary is more traditional and simplistic in design. Highlights not to be missed inside include a gold and jewelled crown, gold and silver religious artifacts and a high altar hand carved in mahogany.
The beaches and beautiful coast line of Punta Cana is less than an hour away from Higuey. Relax on the sand, cool off in the water or for those with a bit more energy, enjoy the wide range of watersports and beachside activities available.
There is something for everyone to enjoy at night in Higuey. Much of the nightlife is based in the local hotels. Most of the hotels feature a different show or act every night of the week, so there is plenty of choice! From romantic piano bars to big sound system club nights, you can take your pick. Several of the clubs have casinos, often with Las Vegas themed shows. You can try your luck with roulette, blackjack and slot machines. If gambling isn't your thing, then why not visit one of the magic shows. Whatever your taste, you are sure to find something to keep you entertained.
Higuey's closest airport is Punta Cana International Airport, one of the Caribbean's busiest airports, serving over one million visitors each year. Also nearby is the La Romana International Airport.
Both public and private buses operate between and within the cities. Bus stops are located at the airports and in the centre of Higuey. Taxis are also readily available and may be convenient if you don't want to wait. For those who want to explore on their own terms, a range of cars are available to hire from companies in the city and at the airport.
