If you are looking for the genuine 'old' Jamaica, then look no further than Black River which is situated in the quiet parish of St. Elizabeth. This region offers adventure and discovery and is not for the feint hearted. St. Elizabeth is a relatively undiscovered area of Jamaica and as such, traditional farming and fishing communities can be found offering friendship, advice and information, as well as some of the best Jamaican food anywhere.
Getting to St. Elizabeth takes approximately two hours by car from Montego Bay Airport and renting an air-conditioned car is the preferred method of transport, as this will enable you to travel around at your own pace. Of course there are plenty of routes for walking, as well as hiring taxis or boats. Make sure you pick up a road map, however, as most of the tourist attractions are accessed using secondary roads.
Black River itself is only one of the many villages that make up the parish of St. Elizabeth and, although there are a limited number of hotels in Black River itself, there are plenty of guest houses and places to stay nearby. Food here has been described as 'mouth-watering' and 'awesome' and there are bars and restaurants in Black River which serve a variety of traditional foods such as jerk chicken, shrimp and burgers.
When planning things to do, consider taking a boat trip on the Black River itself as this is highly recommended, giving you a chance to experience some of the best scenery Jamaica has to offer. You will be able to watch the crocodiles close up, as well as marvelling at the enormous mangrove trees and their amazing root systems. Some boat trip providers can arrange stops on your journey allowing you to enjoy the fresh cuisine in special 'huts' where you will also be able to meet the locals. Another popular boat trip takes you along the Black River to Treasure Beach, which consists of four separate coves just waiting to be discovered. If you are near Treasure Beach, be sure to visit Lover's Leap with its sheer cliff drops and don't miss out on the opportunity of chatting to a local and discovering the history behind this natural wonder. On your boat journey, be sure to keep an eye out for the dolphins.
Attractions in Black River also include the Black River Gorge where you can enjoy picnicking, whilst taking in the spectacular views of the YS Falls which are made up from several beautiful waterfalls situated just off the Black River. Take a trip to Accompong Village where you will find yourself steeped in history, or visit the Appleton Estate and take a tour around the rum factory.
Although not renowned for shopping, Black River has a bustling market once a week where you are bound to find a bargain or two and if you still have the energy at the end of your action packed days, nightlife includes cafes, bars and even cabaret shows in St. Elizabeth, Negril and Montego Bay itself.
What ever you are looking for, you will find something to interest and inspire you in Black River.
