Nuevo Horizonte Holidays

Nuevo Horizonte (or sometimes called Costa Antigua) is located on the east coast of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. This is the most relaxed of all the Canary Islands and the relatively new resort of Nuevo Horizonte is a quiet spot within easy striking distance of the hustle and bustle of its livelier neighbour Costa Caleta. Nuevo Horizonte is a growing resort with several bars and restaurants and although purpose built it remains friendly and relaxing making it a quiet and leisurely place for those looking to unwind. It is a good choice for families and golfers and those who want a safe, relaxing and friendly but quiet time.

Being relatively new it has a modern manmade feel to it but nevertheless it has been finished to a high standard and it has a relaxing atmosphere and is widely recognised as an up and coming resort. Most of the resort's development is now complete and it has retained its small quiet charm. It has arisen from what was one of the oldest villages on the island having once been the capital for a short period of time a reminder of this history is the picturesque church in the centre which was erected in 1785.

Nearby Costa Caleta can be reached via a scenic cliff top stroll (going past chipmunk mountain where families of chipmunks can be fed on the way) or by a longer coastal promenade. The planned development between the two resorts may well see Nuevo Horizonte become a district of its larger counterpart. At Costa Caleta you can take advantage of many sight seeing excursions and trips as well as shopping and other leisure and entertainment facilities. It also has easy access to local golf courses (now 2 18-hole courses), diving trips and catamaran sailing trips.

Nuevo Horizonte is a nice, quiet base with a small selection of bars and restaurants offering all that is needed. The choice of cuisine includes Spanish, Italian, Chinese, British and pub style food. A few of the hotels and bars offer entertainment as well as food but in general the nightlife has the same quiet and relaxed pace as the resort during the day. It is essentially more of a residential area. There are also a number of small supermarkets making self catering an easy option.

The resort has a fully restored windmill, which has been converted into a craft shop, selling local souvenirs and art. For shopping there is also a great local market. Fuerteventura has special exemption from EU taxes on perfumes, alcohol and tobacco, which means these items, can be bought for less than in the rest of mainland Europe.

Those looking for more in the way of shopping should visit the Atlantic Shopping Centre at nearby Costa Caleta which along with a large supermarket has a cinema, amusement arcade, bowling alley, designer shops, bars and restaurants. Future plans include developing the walk between the resorts to enable the shopping centre to be reached from Nuevo Horizonte. The walkway to Costa Caleta is well lit so perfectly accessible after dark for those looking for a little more than the resort has to offer in the evening. Alternatively a taxi ride should only cost around three Euros for the short trip.

Packages are available to the resort or you can book your flights directly to the island's main airport. Flights are available from all of the UK's main airports with operators such as Thomas Cook and First Choice or from Ireland with Ryanair. The flight time is approximately 4 hours, then if you hire a car or take a transfer (buses or taxis are available depending on your preference) the journey down to the resort will only take around 15 minutes. Nuevo Horizonte is a popular all year round destination being mainly dry and sunny with temperatures ranging between 19°-23° in the winter and 27°-32° in the summer.

Although Nuevo Horizonte is a coastal resort the area is very rocky and those looking for the beach will need to head to nearby Costa Caleta which has a beautiful (albeit manmade) beach with further investment to upgrade its facilities due for completion in 2010. The resort has the advantage of being close to Fuerteventura capital, Puerto Rosario, which is a traditional, old harbour town and busy working port including a colourful carnival in July.

If you want to venture further afield Nuevo Horizonte is a good base to hire a car from as it is well connected with easy access into the centre of the island. Being quite central it is relatively easy to explore a good part of the island.
